The four topic areas
Questions are drawn from these areas. Use our topic tests to drill each one.
1. Road signs and signals
Sign shapes and colors, traffic lights, and pavement markings. You should know what a sign means by its shape and color alone. Practice road signs.
2. Traffic laws and right of way
Speed limits, right of way at intersections, turns, passing, parking and Florida-specific rules. Practice road rules.
3. Safe driving practices
Following distance, driving in rain and fog, sharing the road, and handling skids and emergencies. Practice safe driving.
4. Alcohol and drugs
Florida DUI limits, the implied consent law, and zero tolerance for drivers under 21. Practice alcohol and drug laws.
Scoring
Each question is multiple choice. There is no penalty for wrong answers beyond losing that point, so never leave a question blank. You need 40 of 50 right to pass, which means you can miss up to 10 questions.
Tips to pass the first time
- Take full practice exams. Simulating all 50 questions builds stamina and surfaces weak spots. Take a full mock exam.
- Read every explanation. Understanding why an answer is correct helps you handle reworded questions on the real test.
- Memorize sign shapes and colors. These are easy points if you study them.
- Know the numbers. Speed limits, BAC limits and following distances come up often.
- Re-read each question. Watch for words like "except," "always" and "never."
